Bach's St. John Passion in St. Stephen's Cathedral

Date: Saturday, 25.03.2017
Time: 08.30 pm

About the event:
The fasting season before Easter is always the time for performing the world-famous "Passionen" of J. S. Bach. What would be more appropriate than listening to this masterpiece of classical church music- the St. John Passion- in one of the most beautiful sacral spaces Austria has to offer?
After several performances during Bach's lifetime, the St. John Passion- like Bach's entire work - fell into oblivion. The St. John Passion was not rediscovered before 1834, four years after Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy had successfully re-performed the St. Matthew Passion. Today, the St. John Passion ("Johannespassion") is regarded as one of the most important works of music history and one of the most frequently performed works of sacred music.
